Community Poverty Framework Training
March 6, 2014 Thursday
CMC Auditorium 8:00am to 5:00pm
Facilitator: Dr. Regina A. Lewis, National Presenter
Routt County United Way, Lift Up and Routt County Department of Human Services are hosting the community poverty framework training free of charge for anyone in the community.
The training provides insight into four areas that impact people in poverty
- The behavior of the individual in poverty
- Human and social capital
- The exploitation of the poor
- Economic and political structures.
The model encourages our community to examine these areas and take actions that remove the obstacles that impede individuals in poverty from moving to self-sufficiency.
Community stakeholders will learn the framework of poverty and how it affects the services to those living in poverty. Community engagement will expand beyond the typical human services agencies and include; schools, banks, businesses/employers, government, community families, law enforcement and others.
“If you didn’t grow up in poverty, you may be unaware of the “hidden rules” that govern many aspects of life for the poor. People in poverty are often in survival mode, where the future holds no promise, and support systems taken for granted in middle class and wealth are nonexistent. If your business, agency, or organization works with people from poverty, only a deeper understanding of their challenges and strengths will help you partner with them to create opportunities for success.” Ruby K. Payne, PhD, Philip E. DeVol, Terie Dreussi Smith (2001), Bridges out of Poverty.
